Breaking Barriers: Making TV Subtitles Accessible for Deaf Sports Fans
Hey everyone! 🚀 During Euro 2024, we noticed an important issue with TV subtitles covering crucial details like team names, scores, and game times. But there’s a simple fix: by slightly repositioning the subtitles, we can make the viewing experience much better for deaf and hard-of-hearing sports fans.
In this video, we'll show you how moving subtitles to the right can prevent them from obstructing key information. We’ll also discuss the impact of using different subtitle colours for panel discussions to avoid confusion and ensure clarity.
Another major improvement? Adding commentator names to the subtitles so viewers can easily identify who’s speaking, especially when commentators aren’t visible on screen.
However, there’s a challenge with the BBC Sport Contact Form’s support for BSL (British Sign Language) users. Currently, it doesn’t allow uploading BSL videos, which are crucial for effective communication.
We’re calling on broadcasters to make these changes: repositioning subtitles, using distinct colors, and improving BSL accessibility. Let’s work together to make sports broadcasts accessible for everyone!
